Most likely inspired by the Te Anau's famous glow-worm caves on it's distant shores Te Anau was originally named Te Ana-au, Maori for 'Cave of swirling water'.
Te Anau is at the heart of New Zealand's Deep South and is the gateway to the natural wonders of Fiordland National park.
The Te Anau township is situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Te Anau. Lake Te Anau is the South Island's largest lake, New Zealand's largest volume of fresh water and has the longest coastline of any New Zealand lake.
Though small in size, Te Anau township has everything a traveller needs. There are plenty of cosy places to eat, banks and a grocery store for supplies. There is even a cute cinema.
Most Fiordland tour operators are based in Te Anau and those that aren't, usually have a Te Anau pick up service.
